Travel suggestions for Germany
Our son is planning to travel to Germany and will be in Bremen in April. He will be going to Aachen to see the cathedral. He is a lover of old buildings and history. Any must see or do? Any travel advice for those areas?. He is planning on using the trains to move around and will be alone but meeting a friend in Bremen for a Easter festival. Thank you for any advice and ideas.

Germany is packed with sights but they are wide spread. If it comes to modern architecture, Berlin and Hamburg and (maybe) Düsseldorf are worth a trip.
More fascinating are the multiple remains of the medieval era, like castles, cathedrals and well preserved old towns with picturesque half-timbered houses.
I recommend:
Bamberg
Rothenburg op der Tauber
Regensburg
Würzburg
Heidelberg
Wetzlar
Fulda
Speyer
Trier
Aachen
Köln
Bremen
Hamburg
Lübeck
Berlin
Potsdam
Dresden

No red light district...... He may be a young man but trust me, night life and partying are not his thing. The other places sound great alien.

Red light district, hmmmm…

Oops, so many bombed out cities. Dresden then, go to Dresden. Koln (if he goes there) isn’t super exciting from what I recall outside of cathedrals. Very rebuilt in a modern fashion. Also, Germans be bonkers after soccer games, avoid them…Augsburg was a very quaint college town, but where Luther eliminated all the curlicues, but beautiful in it’s own austere way…If I had my druthers, I would go to Berlin, so much history, but it is a big city, it’s where I will visit first when I go back to Germany, I have had many friends move there for a bit and they loved it!

Was Dresden, not Nuremberg. Dresden has amazing architecture. Leipzig is nice. Hafen City in Hamburg is quite nice, and St Michael's church is a popular tourist attraction. Otherwise Hamburg is more famous for the night-life and red light district. Can't remember if I was in Bremen. Völkerschlachtdenkmal near Leipzig is also quite interesting, is a monument to one of the battles in the Napoleanic wars.

Also, Alien once recommended Leipzig and Nuremberg for beauty. They look fantastic.

All I can say is staying in hostels at that age is a great way to meet people and form connections. I have been to Aachen and Koln, but so long ago and very briefly, so can’t offer any advice in that regard. The trains are great! I would check out the World Heritage sites in Germany for architecture and see if he is interested in any of those. Everything is so accessible by train. He will have a blast!

This site is a lot of fun to look through for museums, gardens, historical markers, eateries, and oddities-- the general theme is featuring less well-known spots, or things you might not have thought of.
