Highlight of Your Day

Yay, it’s time for Hooray etc.

The internet is full of bad news and arguing (that’s mostly me tbf but I’m trying to control my impulses)…anyone want to share the highlight(s) of their day(s)? It could be uplifting and super duper positive (unless you’re a total downer).

It’s too early for me to choose one for today, so far I’ve only accidentally smeared houmous across the side of my head and walked around a lot, but yesterday…I saw a hare chilling among the vines at the vineyard down the road, munching on stuff. Très Disney.

Thank god, dom, it’s good to know someone is looking out for us all. 😆

domino wrote:

Ahhhhh, so cute.

And good to know that we have a button now to upload pics.

@lime: I wouldn't even let you near to any nuclear facility. :-)))))

Limequat wrote:

Omg it’s so teeeeny. 🥹 Awwwww.

Also, you’re welcome - I press all buttons I see, it’s a good thing I don’t work in a nuclear facility or something.

Catlover wrote:

Thanks for the info lime. Didn't even notice those!

Catlover wrote:

So here is the bat. Went to feed my birds and the little guy was in the bird seed bag. This bag is right behind couch though.

Limequat wrote:

It’s easier now - when you create your post you get the thingies above where you type. You just press this one…

Catlover wrote:

Think I should update my photo to the cute little bat I found in my house the first time instead of the butterfly. I haven't figured out how to load them here although I think alien posted instructions somewhere.

Limequat wrote:

Nobody thinks it’s cute when I hiss at them. 🤷‍♀️

dom, you’re still pretty. 😘

I used to save grubby wild animals too…until the mouse incident.

I turned around just in time to see one poorly mouse (who was being nursed back to health) rear up and dramatically sink its teeth into another’s throat…

Traumatised.

Lol Sasa…Fangs. Make this film, if it’s not already made.

Sasa wrote:

I don’t have any bats 🦇 they are lovely as long as they aren’t rabid. @Sil, you are right, baby bats would make me like bras more and open my chest drawer with anticipation every morning..

@Cat, soooo glad to hear that your son in on the mend.

Bats are the number one carrier of rabies in Oregon so in grade school we had to watch a horrifying short film about rabid bats being dangerous. I was scared to open my closet door for weeks. It was like the Jaws film for bats, vilifying innocent creatures for the most part.

Anyway, have tenants from hell in my short term rental; I could hear them arguing through the walls. Good times. Hope this week goes quickly…

Many years ago I found a little bat on one of my cemetery walks. It was lying on the ground and I first thought it was a leaf. But then it moved a little.. So I took it in my hands and it was so fluffy and the feet were soooo tiny. Such a cute thing.

Last year I found an apathetic mouse. I took it home, put it in a little box with some newspaper snippets, water and apple pieces. I placed the box right beside me in my bed. I named the mouse Snuggles. Next day it felt obvioisly better, because I was woken up by some rustling sound. I set Snuggles free the same day. He happily ran away but he left me some little friends...ah, and, did I mention that right the next day there was this article in the newspaper about bank voles transmitting the hanta virus. One day saving animals will kill me;-)

@cat: I'm happy too that your son is on mend. I wished you made that offer regarding available young ladies 25 years earlier. At that age I was still wellbehaved, pretty and not as cynic as today if it comes to relationships.

Catlover wrote:

Bats are kewl. This a is a brown bat colony that will only stay for a couple of weeks. They are so cute when they hiss and show their tiny little fangs. I wish they would eat all the killer mosquitos in our back yard though. So they can stay until they clean it up.

Limequat wrote:

So glad to hear your son is doing better, Cat!

I know some available young women, but I wouldn’t call them ladies. Demons, maybe. 😶😆

I think we’re all in agreement that bats are kewl (aside from the diseases/spread of viruses thing) and that we should take every opportunity to comb their fluffy faces.

I actually saw a nifty post on Reddit about bats a few months back, I shall attempt to link it, so cute.

Catlover wrote:

Speaking of bats, can I export a colony to someone? We apparently have a huge family living around our chimney. Keeps the cats entertained for hours sitting by the fireplace listening to them.

In other good news, our kid is recovering from his surgery. Upset he doesn't have a lot of strength in the left arm and hand but that should improve with physical therapy that starts next week. It could have been so much worse but he is in his 20s and thinks he's immortal at this age. Now if anyone knows of some available young ladies, I have a couple of great boys. 😁. Have a wonderful day everyone!

Small lizards like to climb and sit on our windows at night to catch bugs under the light on the side of the apartment building. There's a really tiny one up there now, and last night there was a rather chunky frog too. Had no idea those could climb that high up a wall.

...I might actually like bras if they had more bats in them.

And lawns, monoculture grass lawns are dumb. I like flowers or clover or moss better. Flower lawn sounds lovely.

Limequat wrote:

Sounds pretty Sasa.

Limequat wrote:

I’ve tried being nice to him dom and it doesn’t make any difference.

Edited to add: in fact, he didn’t like it and told me to stop.

domino wrote:

Sometimes I pity poor Alien. So much nasty women power. Today I would like to take up the cudgels for him (what a lovely new phrase:-) The Boojum platform allows me to come down after a day with lots of stupid customers on the phone. So, now you can all call me an apple-polisher (hahaha, next kewl word!).

Sasa wrote:

The grass seeds I bought is called “fleur de lawn”. Now I am thinking they may not all be native, since one flower is “English” daisy lol. But they save water and I am honestly not into grass when I can have little blossoms to step on.

Ah yes, jeans can cut off circulation. Be careful to keep the blood flowing to your heart Alien.

Limequat wrote:

Sasa - those alternatives to grass…they make good boggle words, just saying. I’ve seen a few on there.

Was going to have a load of different types in the courtyard, but planning to do it in what will be The New Bit Of Garden.

Which types did you buy?

Your boys are still being impressive. Tell them to hurry up and save the world.

As for Dorkus…he became that way after wearing jeans every day of his life. His poor legs are so trapped and uncomfortable…it’s what happens.

It definitely isn’t my fault anyway.

😶

Sasa wrote:

Alienzen, were you born grouchy or did it just develop over time and experience?

I don’t know you very well and am curious…

Sasa wrote:

Alien shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, you are not following directions. Positivity is the theme!

Alienzen wrote:

Highlight of my day was Lime being busy so I finally go some moments of peace.

Sasa wrote:

Well today I purchased some “alternative to grass” seeds which are composed of little yellow, blue, and purple flowers (all native) and developed at my older son’s alma mater. I also picked a huge bouquet of flowers from my garden and felt some energy from cars passing by that I was stealing flowers, when I was at the front slope (so funny). I have had a few strangers ask if they can take flowers for their weddings to save money, and I was into it, if I could supervise, again these were total strangers complaining about the cost of having a bunch of flowers at their weddings, but I kept my composure and never said, “Hey, there is always elopement.” No one actually did take flowers, maybe friends or family piped in.

I saw a lovely swallow tail butterfly and thought that hummingbirds must just think they are so lazy and slow (feel like that on boggle sometimes tbh.) Everyone has their own pace and way of being.

I am looking into doing some project this summer and haven’t decide what. Was considering a young adult novel, but went to my friends house and now want to paint and do stained glass windows.

I did something to my forearm while lifting my 8 lbs. weights (don’t laugh, I know that isn’t super heavy.). I was using them for a long time while exercising and it feels like my under-forearm is on fire.

Watched my younger son bake some pumpkin, chocolate chip muffins, and the rise was perfection. I am trying to soak him up before he leaves and teach him all I can about food, so he can woo his adorable German-American engineer girlfriend, who is awesome and loves to bike and also has dual citizenship and I love her already even though we won’t meet until August.

My youngest son applied for a research position on polymers and leaves soon (misses his love) and scored a second interview when he returns to Minneapolis.

My sons are my magnum opus. They are so directed and ambitious and say please and thank you. What else could a mother ask for?

I am taking my bestie golfing at the prettiest golf course in Portland, I think, haven’t been to many, but she LOVES golf and even watches it without having her eyes fall out from boredom (hey Limes).

Anyway didn’t do much, but injure myself and think a lot. Hope you all had a magical day!

I love to read the Hightlights of Your Day. I like it, how all the different experiences show how wide the range of things that can make us happy is. And I like it to find out how you guys spend your time when you don't play Boojum. Thanks for supporting my word creation "berryly". In fact it is based on a German advertisment for Haribo Goldbears. There it says "They are bearyly good". At least this is the precise translation of the German sentence;-)

I want a bat in my bra too. And a pool to put my feet in. Solstice party sounds great to.

Sasa wrote:

Wow a baby bat in a bra cup?! That might just turn me off bras forever. Glad you didn’t sink into the earth like water from a garden hose. I love Russian Sage as well….

I use strawberry-y-y a lot, may try strawberryly now.

Limequat wrote:

The highlight of my (Mon)day was sitting in a garden (not mine) on my own, with my feet in the pool, saving a tiny, panicked grasshopper from drowning and watching all the bees, beetles and butterflies flitting about the various plants (they’re particularly fond of perovskia, as am I) - there was a fantastic view of the valley also. It was a very calm moment.

I was informed afterwards that a sinkhole had opened up in front of the house 3 years earlier and that it’d been condemned for a while. That was less relaxing and I probably won’t go there again, despite it being declared fine now. :/

Limequat wrote:

Cat, so funny, the image of you waiting for the bat. Well done setting it free! I’m sure it was as relieved as you were.

When I first moved to France, my mother and I were staying in an apartment in Cipières, a little village up a mountain. Amazing views, lots of caves and things.

Was a lovely place, but kinda got the vibe that if you weren’t careful, the villagers might eat/sacrifice you. You know?

One day my mother was getting ready to go out, she put on her bra and was about to put on her dress, when she noticed something…moving in her bra...luckily she didn’t scream or rip it off and fling it across the room, because a small, very cute bat had been sleeping in one of the cups.

Sooo…watch out when you get dressed, that’s all I’m saying.

Dom, I will do what I can to try to get people using strawberryly - I hope that it becomes an official dictionary word by next year, I love it.

I have very much enjoyed reading everyone’s highlights.

I hope you all continue to have nice moments that you’ll share.

Because if you don’t…in three days your left shoes will all disappear and your toothbrushes will burst into flames and…something else weirdly disturbing will happen too.

Probably.

Well, I went to a summer solstice party and saw a bunch of old friends and was absolutely astounded by the artsiness of my friend’s home and it reminds me of all the art I have collected and donated over the years, not fancy, from friends or garage sales, or myself, or my labor with the littles, but I walked into her home and thought, “Wowsa it does feel like an artist lives here.” I am rethinking my home.

And I know I am foremost a teacher right now, which I love, love, love, (I really am bonkers for the little ones, not in my 20’s but now, I so adore their minds) but I also have a foot in art, because it is so fun and expressive and used to start conversations and connections with people, which is imao all life is really about, and I studied it so much when I could have been putting money into materials, blah, blah, blah. Plus her partner had an amazing carriage house/art studio that was to die for.

Borrowed an autographed copy of Lucinda Williams autobiography which I have been savoring, stopping to listen to the songs she cites (I have seen her a lot and am a huge fan) and wondering which baked good I should return with it. But anyway. Life is definitely not this or that it is THIS AND THIS, until your back gives out and you cry because you are old and can’t jog or stand really, without pain…

Anyway. Don’t know why I start my day with this, but I do and I am sure it is for the good of something….thanks Alice for a great accompaniment to my Americano… and Lucinda, I truly love you!

I saw the cutest little fawn with its mother the other day on the way to work. Motherhood gave that doe the wisdom that the average deer lacks and she motioned to her baby to stand still by the side of the road and wait while the cars passed. Someone should give her the mother deer of the year award.

Catlover wrote:

Replaced a part on my jeep. I successfully caught the bat and was able to set him free outside. They make really funny noises hisses and squeaks when they get mad. The cats are fired! But it is still miserably warm here. Strawberries sound yummy Dom. We found chantarelle mushrooms at the cabin on Thursday. They're A bit early this year but will make a nice mushroom pasta this week.

domino wrote:

Five minutes ago I "harvested" 8 strawberries from the pots on my balcony. They tasted so sweet and strawberryly (does this word exist in English? Berry as an adjective?). It's always the little wonders that make my day.

Alienzen wrote:

I went to the lake and drank some beer. There was a miniature bear-dog barking at people, a man showing off his huge belly proudly and a woman posing for her instagram photos.

Catlover wrote:

Maybe not positive but certainly funny. I woke up this morning to a brown bat flying around in out house and the cats chasing it. Me in my pajamas running around with a fish net trying to catch it. Woke up my husband and one son with my noise who both went back to sleep while I sit here in the dark waiting for it to fly again. Of course it is daylight now and it is hunkered down above one of the kitchen cabinets in a crevice where it can't be bothered. Tonight will be a new adventure. The cats need to get better at catching bats. After all, they are just flying mice.
